WiFi 5 vs 6 vs 6E vs 7: what actually changed

Understand the differences between WiFi generations and their practical implications for your home network.


WiFi 5 (802.11ac), WiFi 6 (802.11ax), WiFi 6E (802.11ax with 6 GHz band), and WiFi 7 (802.11be) represent different stages in the evolution of wireless networking technology, each bringing specific improvements to performance, efficiency, and functionality.

The Three Bands

WiFi operates on three main frequency bands:

  • 2.4 GHz: Offers longer range but slower speeds, often crowded with other devices like Bluetooth and microwaves. Ideal for smart home devices.
  • 5 GHz: Faster than 2.4 GHz, shorter range, better for general networking needs.
  • 6 GHz (WiFi 6E/7 only): Provides the fastest speeds in a cleaner spectrum but has the shortest range. Requires new devices to fully utilize its capabilities.

What Each Generation Actually Brought

WiFi 5 (802.11ac)

  • Release Year: 2013
  • Key Features:
    • Higher throughput and wider channels.
    • Better for high-definition video streaming and gaming.
    • Still used in many homes due to its robust performance.

WiFi 6 (802.11ax)

  • Release Year: 2019
  • Key Features:
    • OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access): Allows the router to serve multiple devices simultaneously, reducing latency and improving efficiency in crowded networks.
    • TWT (Target Wake Time): Reduces battery consumption on client devices by allowing them to sleep more often.
    • Higher Density Performance: Better performance with a higher number of connected devices.

WiFi 6E (802.11ax with 6 GHz band)

  • Release Year: 2021
  • Key Features:
    • Utilizes the 6 GHz band for faster speeds and cleaner spectrum.
    • No new protocols, just the addition of a dedicated high-speed frequency.

WiFi 7 (802.11be)

  • Release Year: 2024
  • Key Features:
    • MLO (Multi-Link Operation): Allows devices to use multiple bands simultaneously for improved performance.
    • 320 MHz Channels in 6 GHz: Larger channel widths for faster data rates.
    • 4K-QAM: Advanced modulation technique for higher throughput.

Practical Implications

Device Compatibility

  • Upgrading the router alone does not necessarily upgrade your devices. Ensure that both the router and client devices support the newer standards.
  • For stationary devices like servers, desktops, or TVs, wired connections (Ethernet) are often more reliable and faster than wireless.

Network Design Considerations

  • Mesh Systems: Effective for improving coverage but may not significantly enhance speed unless all components support 6 GHz.
  • Single AP Placement: Often better than poorly-placed mesh systems in terms of overall performance.
  • Internet Speeds: A gigabit internet connection paired with WiFi 6 or higher is a good balance, especially as device support improves.

Buying Guidance

  • Upgrade Your Devices: Ensure that both the router and client devices are up to date. WiFi 7 will only benefit you if your devices support it.
  • Wired vs Wireless: Use wired connections for stationary devices where reliability is crucial.
  • Mesh Networks: Useful for expanding coverage but may not significantly improve speed unless all components support 6 GHz.
