Ethernet cable categories: Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat8 — what speeds really need

Ethernet Cable Categories: Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat8 — What Speeds Really Need?

For almost every home, cat5e already does gigabit speeds fine, and cat6 is the sensible default for new runs. Most "upgrade your cables" advice sells copper you don't need.

Categories

cat5e

  • 1 Gbps at 100m: Also supports 2.5 Gbps at typical home distances (multi-gig was designed to run on installed 5e).
  • Installed Base: The most common and widely used category globally.
  • Quality Considerations: Genuine copper, solid for in-wall runs, and high-quality termination.

cat6

  • 1 Gbps at 100m, 10 Gbps up to ~55m: Tighter twists and often a plastic spline.
  • Sensible Default: A good choice for new cable installations today; barely costs more than 5e.
  • Quality Considerations: Genuine copper, solid for in-wall runs, and high-quality termination.

cat6a

  • 10 Gbps at full 100m: Thicker, stiffer, shielded variants common.
  • Future Proofing: Ideal for new builds where labor costs are significant; provides future-proofing.
  • Quality Considerations: Genuine copper, solid for in-wall runs, and high-quality termination.

cat7/7a

  • Not a Real TIA Category: Mostly marketing in the consumer space. Skip this category unless you have specific requirements not covered by 6 or 6a.
  • Marketing Scam Vector: Cat8 cables are often sold as "gaming" cables, but they do not improve gigabit internet speeds.

cat8

  • 25/40 Gbps at 30m: Designed for datacenter racks; pointless for home use.
  • Datacenter Use Only: Pointless in a typical home setup. Gigabit internet + gigabit switch + cat6 cable = 1 Gbps, and cat8 does not change this.

What Matters More Than Category

Copper Quality

  • Avoid CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum): It can degrade performance.

Cable Type

  • Solid vs Stranded: Solid for in-wall runs, stranded for patch cables.

Termination Quality

  • High-quality termination is crucial. A badly crimped cat6a performs worse than a good cat5e.

The Actual Speed Chain Rule

Your network speed is determined by the slowest link:

  • Gigabit Internet + Gigabit Switch + Cat6 Cable + Gigabit Port = 1 Gbps
  • Negotiation Issues: If your connection drops to 100 Mbps, suspect a damaged pair in the cable. Gigabit requires all four pairs.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

  • Power Over Ethernet: Runs on the same cables as data; thicker copper (cat6+) runs cooler for higher power budgets.

By understanding these categories and their practical applications, you can make informed decisions about your home networking setup without unnecessary upgrades.
