  5. 4.5 SureBackup and virtual labs

Objective 4.1 Restore operations

On the official blueprint

β€’ Restore operations
β€’ Instant Recovery
β€’ File-level restore
β€’ Explorers: SQL, Exchange, AD, SharePoint, Teams
β€’ SureBackup
β€’ Virtual labs

4.1.1 Restore operations

β€’ Entire VM restore Β· Use it when: Bring the whole VM back to the original or a new location.
β€’ Quick rollback Β· Use it when: Option of entire VM restore to the original location. Uses CBT to restore only changed blocks. Much faster after a guest-level problem such as a bad patch.
β€’ Instant Recovery Β· Use it when: The VM must be running again in minutes.
β€’ Virtual disk / VM files restore Β· Use it when: Only one disk or the .vmx file is needed.
β€’ Guest file-level restore Β· Use it when: Only some files or folders are needed.
β€’ Application item restore (Explorers) Β· Use it when: Only a mailbox, a database, an AD object and so on.
β€’ Restore to cloud Β· Use it when: Restore into Azure, AWS or Google Cloud.

TRAP

Quick rollback cannot be used for a hardware-level problem (failed disk, lost datastore). The original VM must still exist and be healthy at the storage level.

Secure restore scans the backup with antivirus before restoring it, so you do not bring malware back into production.

Objective 4.2 Instant Recovery

4.2.1 Instant Recovery

β€’ Runs the VM directly from the backup file. On vSphere the mount server publishes the backup through vPower NFS as a datastore.
β€’ The backup file is never changed. Writes go to a redo log / cache.
β€’ Finish the session in one of two ways: migrate to production (Storage vMotion or Veeam Quick Migration) or stop publishing (the VM and its changes disappear).

MEMORISE

Instant Recovery gives you the shortest RTO. It is a temporary state until you migrate the VM to production.

TRAP

Performance during Instant Recovery depends on the repository disks. Slow dedupe storage makes a slow VM.

Objective 4.3 File-level restore

4.3.1 File-level restore

β€’ Windows guests: the mount server mounts the backup's disks. You browse in the Veeam Backup Browser and restore, overwrite, or keep both copies.
β€’ Linux and other file systems: a temporary helper appliance (or a helper host) mounts the disks.
β€’ Guest file indexing during backup lets you search for files across restore points without mounting them.

Official docs for 4.3 (1)

Objective 4.4 Veeam Explorers

4.4.1 Veeam Explorers

β€’ SQL Server Β· Restores: Databases (including to a point in time when log backups exist), tables, export
β€’ Exchange Β· Restores: Mailboxes, folders, items. Export to PST
β€’ Active Directory Β· Restores: Objects, containers, attributes, GPOs
β€’ SharePoint Β· Restores: Sites, lists, libraries, items
β€’ Teams Β· Restores: Teams, channels, posts, files. Works with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 backups

TRAP

SQL point-in-time restore needs transaction log backups (enabled in AAP). An image-only backup restores only to the moment of the backup.

Official docs for 4.4 (2)

Objective 4.5 SureBackup and virtual labs

4.5.1 SureBackup and virtual labs

SureBackup proves a backup can actually be recovered. It starts VMs from backups inside an isolated virtual lab, runs tests, then shuts everything down.

β€’ Tests: heartbeat (VMware Tools), ping, and application tests (built-in or your own scripts).
β€’ Application group: VMs that must start first and in order, such as the domain controller and DNS before the application server.
β€’ Virtual lab: isolated networks that mirror production, plus a proxy appliance that routes into the lab. Lab VMs reached through a masquerade IP.
β€’ SureReplica: the same verification for replicas.

MEMORISE

SureBackup VMs run from backups through vPower NFS, the same engine as Instant Recovery. Production is never touched.

SureBackup can also run a backup file integrity check and a malware scan without starting VMs.

MEMORISE

DataLabs (Recovery Orchestrator) are built on top of VBR virtual labs. See Domain 6.
